Hack your metabolism with Lumen!
We have been sharing our numbers from Lumen and we are getting a lot of questions, so we know we need to share our feedback and experience on how we are using Lumen and hacking our metabolism!
But before we get into that, let me explain what Lumen is. Lumen is the world’s first hand-held, portable device to accurately measure metabolism. Once available only to top athletes, in hospitals and clinics, metabolic testing is now available to everyone.
It really is NOT about how much you weigh, it is about your body composition. You want more lean muscle mass than body fat. Healthy adult women should have 25-31% body fat, while athletes may be as low as 14%. Anything over 31% body fat is considered obese.
This device measures your CO2 in your breath to see if you are in carb or fat burning mode.
We thought because we ate clean we would naturally be in fat being mode after a night of sleep, turns out we were wrong! We've been using our Lumen for the past 6 weeks, and we are still tweaking our Plant Chics Lifestyle workouts and nutrition to fine tune our body composition.
Here are a couple things we have noticed that have helped us hack our metabolism and get into fat burn:
- I cut out my starchy carb at dinner which has helped me wake up in fat burn (blowing a 1 or 2)
- Not getting enough sleep impacts my metabolism and will shift me to carb burn in the morning
- Exercise has consistently gotten Jacque into fat burn
- Jacque has noticed that the quantity of food she eats in the day impacts what she blows. If she overeats, she blows a higher number. So Lumen has been a great reminder for her to not over eat (it still happens occasionally)
- Jacque has also noticed that circadian fasting may not be the best for her and that having a small sweet snack (1 - 2 dates with or without peanut butter) before bed helps her to blow a lower number in the morning
If you do get a lumen, we recommend that you blow frequently the first two weeks to see what impacts your score. For example, blow 30-45 before/after meals; blow 30-45 min before/after exercise.
