6 ways to Plant Chic out your favorite family recipes

March is National Nutrition month and and I'm going to share six ways to Plant Chics out your favorite family recipes!

This year's theme for NNM is Celebrate a World of Flavors. This theme showcases how flavors from cultures around the world is a tasty way to nourish ourselves and appreciate our diversity. We are all unique with different bodies, goals, backgrounds, and tastes!

My Dad is from Mexico, and some of my favorite foods are the Mexican foods I grew up on (this is Marzia). But those foods weren't necessarily the healthiest.

I love experimenting in the kitchen and playing around with some of my favorite non-vegan dishes and making them #PlantChicsApproved.

How do I do that, you ask? I am going to share some of my go-to swaps.

6 ways to Plant Chic out your favorite family recipes

  • I like to use jackfruit or lentils in place of meat. Jackfruit takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with and it has a meaty consistency. Lentils can be subbed in place of ground meat and they have a hearty flavor.
  • Play with seasonings! Spices are not only good for your gut, they make your taste buds dance! Try the spices from the produce section because they're packed with more nutrition than some of the dried spices.
  • Instead of sautéing (or frying) in oil, I usually opt for low sodium vegetable broth or water. The food still tastes fabulous, but it may take a few times for your taste buds to get used to no oil, so be patient and keep trying!
  • Use applesauce in place of fats in baked goods. This works well in cake and muffin recipes and can replace about half the fat in cookie recipes.
  • Mashed bananas can replace the fat in chocolate baked goods.
  • We love using dates soaked in water and then pureed (keep the water they soaked in because it's deliciously sweet!!) in place of sugar in recipes.

We have over 100 recipes in our signature Plant Plates that are found in Plant Chics Lifestyle.
